Project emPOWER

With broad support from local school districts and city leaders, I created a train-the-trainer project to address the shortage of self-defense instruction in schools across America and the world.

We trained 2 school districts, 30 teachers, and 20,000 students!

Imagine the nationwide and worldwide impact this can have if just two local school districts building self-defense training into their curriculum has benefited 5000 students. Click on the. links below to learn more about our work at each school district

Reduce Bullying: According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, around 20% of students aged 12-18 experience bullying. Self-defense training can boost their confidence to stand up for themselves and others, potentially decreasing bullying incidents in schools and communities.

Enhance Safety: A survey by the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System found that about 8% of high school students reported being in a fight on school property in a year. Self-defense training helps students recognize and avoid dangerous situations and defend themselves when necessary, enhancing their safety.

Improve Physical Fitness: Self-defense classes promote physical health. The movements involved help maintain a healthy weight, build muscle, and improve heart health. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents aged 6-17 years engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily

Increased Self-esteem and Confidence: Learning self-defense can boost students’ self-esteem and confidence. A confident student is more likely to participate in class, take on leadership roles, and engage positively with peers.

Development of Discipline and Respect: Self-defense training often emphasizes discipline, respect for oneself and others, and self-control. These are valuable life skills that can help students, particularly at-risk youth in their academic and personal lives, promoting better classroom behavior and interpersonal relationships.

And we’re expanding with a pilot program in India!

A country like India has its own nuances on why this program made sense there!

Rising Concerns Over Safety: According to a survey by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, nearly 53% of children in India have faced some form of sexual abuse. Self-defense training can empower students, particularly girls, with the skills and confidence necessary to protect themselves from physical and sexual abuse.

Cultural Shift Towards Gender Equality: Teaching self-defense in schools can contribute to a cultural shift towards gender equality. As girls and boys learn to respect each other’s boundaries and strengths, this training can help challenge and change harmful gender stereotypes and norms.
